beating & cheating.

beating or cheating?   cheating or beating??

india beating pakistan in the cricket or hockey world cup final -  unadulterated bliss for every local and global indian, cricket/hockey lover and hater alike!!

beating the retreat - complete aural orgasm!

beating your wife? grrrrrrrr!!!   how a man. who promises to love and respect his shy new bride can destroy that trust and love in her eyes and heart, in many ways - a slap across her face, pushing her against a wall, burning her with cigarettes, kicking her in the rear - the list is endless.  and when her lovely face and fragile body is covered with bruises or she's dislocated her wrist, the remorse on his once cruel face, so vividly evident at the horror of what he's just done!  promises to change are made, but are empty and hollow.

cheating in an exam, not cool at all!!  cheating death?   ever so often we hear or read about somebody cheating death on a bike, in a car, during 9/11, at mumbai's terrorist attacks aka 28/11.

cheating - men have been doing it since time immemorial.  is it the thrill of the fling?  the danger of not getting caught?  the excitement and anticipation of sex in a sleazy motel, or the back seat of his car where his children sit on family outings?   women are not far behind!   "anything men can do, women do better"!  u gotta be kidding me!!

what has happened to monogamy today?   have vulgarity, perversion, cheap thrills taken over our lives?    a wonderful wise old lady told me once - it's bad enough u have to take your clothes off for your husband, imagine doing it for other men too!   i don't know how a girl can do that.

all of us who are blessed with loving, faithful partners must be eternally grateful to God for bringing them into our lives, and for keeping them that way.

beating your opponent on the cricket field, basketball court, at table tennis or at a chess match - amazingly cool!!
wife, and now, even husband beating - disgustingly uncool.

cheating death - blessed to have been given a second chance!  use it wisely!
cheating on your spouse -  just plain wrong!

indianisms!!

i was introduced to, for want of a better word, indianisms, by my sophisticated & articulate husband, an indian who has lived most of  his life in australia.  i must confess that i have used (cringe!) a couple of them!!

here goes.......................

cope up!
seriously?? cope up!!  "how am i going to cope up with the heat?"     again, seriously??!?
u never, or rather cannot cope up or down for that matter!!

u just, well, cope!!!

off the light/close the fan/on the geyser/close the TV
whaaaat?  u gotta be kidding me!!  sure, some electric appliances - washing machine, microwave, mixi, oven, yeah they 'close' cos they have doors or lids!!

hang on.... they are turned on and off!

stay versus live
how often have we heard, something like, i stay in delhi, or when i moved to madras i stayed close to besant nagar?

wtf?????????????  u sure?

stay is for a short period of time, as in a hotel stay, or stayed with friends while on holiday!

live is where your permanent residence...living in bangalore, got it????  duh!!

alphabets
what is the first thing we learn in school? ABC... and, what are they called? WHAT???

alphabets, u say? wrong answer!! they are - wait for it, horror of horrors,   -  LETTERS!!!  unbelievable?!  believe it!! (this is not an advert for "ripleys believe it or not!!")

letters A to Z form the english alphabet.

so next time, no alphabets (sigh!), only letters.

these are some indianisms my impeccably english speaking husband brought to my attention!!  and i hope, i've done him justice!!!

incidentally, hubby dear is as indian as they come....it's his love for the english language (and me!) which prompted me to share this with you!!

next time, we're gonna do 'bad newsreader and RJ (radio jockey) and miscellaneous others' bad diction.  u up for it???????

my little girl.

her beautiful big brown eyes peek at me from under the quilt but...the twinkle is missing!   a heavy head and blocked nose coupled with a tiny bit of fever have kept my little angel indisposed.

she longs to read (her favourite pastime!) or watch tv, but her throbbing head doesn't permit either.

i hate it when my baby girl and best friend is under the weather, and i hope she feels well soon.

siesta!

No day is so bad it can't be fixed with a nap.
                                                          - Carrie Snow

i miss my afternoon nap!!  so wonderfully short, cool, refreshing and invigorating.  amazingly delicious!  phone off the hook and mobile on silent during that glorious half hour after lunch.

but wait, what about the millions who work in the sun during my naptime -  traffic cop,  security guards, gardeners, farmers, construction workers, mechanics - the list is endless.

they deserve to rest awhile.

allah, ram & christ

am halfway through my medical transcription course; and have new respect for the medical profession.   the terminology alone is mind boggling!!

there are 2 very traditional girls doing the course with me - a muslim and a hindu.  all of us come from such diverse backgrounds and are wives, mothers, daughters, friends, lovers.

S who is muslim, hails from kolar and was raised very traditionally, right down to the gaudy & shiny clothes she wears, loves her husband with the shy, almost innocent love of a newly wed - they will be married a year this april.  her english speaking skills and vocabulary leave a lot to be desired, but she plods along, trying at every step, asking me for help, and requests, nay, almost demands that i correct her grammar!!

P, a telugu speaking hindu is also fairly traditional.  like S, she too had an arranged marriage, and just about tolerates her chauvinistic, overbearing husband who is still tied to his mama's apron strings.  their conversation is a little more than "pass the salt."  they have a gorgeous daughter who is almost 2 years old, whose existence he barely acknowledges, because she committed the terrible sin of being born a girl!!   he works for a globally recognised company, but his thinking is so, for want of a better word, local.

and me, another S, a catholic from such a non-traditional family, it's not funny!!  met my husband on a blind date, married almost 12 years, have inlaws who spoil me rotten (have u heard of an indian father-in-law cooking for his daugher-in-law?!) and a gorgeous 10 year old daughter.

we have lunch together, so reminiscent of our days in school and college, and like girls and women everywhere have a bit of a chat. and gossip about cooking, household chores, parents, inlaws, husbands, sex et al.

the 3 of us - united by medical transcription, but more importantly by diversity!!

allah, ram and christ!

don't leave home without it!

a lot has been written, discussed, pontificated et al about mobile phones.   how this little gadget has revolutionised the world!!  everyone who isn't anyone is connected - the saabs, memsaabs and the walas!!  MDs, CEOs. minister saab, sabziwala, istriwala, bartanwala, maali, mithaiwala, waysidepetrolbunkwala, vakilsaab, doctorsaab -  it has, in a manner of speaking, brought the world closer.

and the joy, and superpower of caller ID!!  damn!  why is she calling again?  doesn't he know we're over?  wtf  does my boss want NOW (2 am?)    and turning the phone off!!  what bliss!!

mobile phones...cell phones - whatever!!  like a spouse - you can't live with them, can't live without them!!

'don't leave home without it'.   sorry amex!! ;)

summer

holi happened...then the heat and with it the power cuts, water shortage, traffic snarls, people snarls, arguing, harried cops, pandemonium and dry taps...the list is endless. summer is here...and will be for a while now!! suck it up...and sweat!! just don't forget your deo!! ;)

and in the midst of all this unnecessary chaos, i saw the cutest sight this morning on my way to class - a toddler not more than 2 and a half years, sitting on his ownsome lonesome under a little umbrella in the blazing sun, in front of his amma's little shop, 'selling' small piles of garlic! his unwashed face, beggar brown hair and the brightest smile one could ever imagine. gorgeous! sadly, the traffic snarl that i was part of prevented me from picking up the little tyke and hugging him! sight for sore eyes, indeed!
